We all love backpacks and we also love filling them! If you’ve ever traveled with me you know that I pack everything and the kitchen sink because you never know what could go wrong! You have to always be prepared! So how do I fit everything in my backpack so the weight is well distributed and my backpack fits properly! When a backpack is fitted well, it will make a world of a difference in how you enjoy your trip!

Before your fit and pack, your backpack, find out how to pick the right one here!

How to fit your backpack:

Congratulations, you got yourself a backpack, now it’s time to fit it so you can hike or backpack with ease! Start with loosing all your straps on your backpack.

  1. With the pack on, tighten the hip belt on your pack. This will carry most of the weight
  2. Next, tighten the shoulder straps by pulling down on the straps. These keep the weight on the pack forward and on your back.
  3. On your shoulders, tighten the load lifter straps to ease the pressure off your shoulders. Aim for 45°.
  4. The sternum straps bring the shoulder straps inward and onto your chest and relieve the pulling back on your shoulders

How to pack your backpack

Now that your backpack is fitted, it’s time to pack it! The places you pack your heavy and light gear matter! When packing it’s important to remember to keep things you need accessible, balance your bag so it’s not lop-sided, condensed so there are no air pockets, and streamlined so nothing falls off or gets snagged on anything.

  1. Medium Waight Gear – Bottom – Sleeping bag, air pads, sleep clothing, etc.
  2. Heavy Weight Gear – Back Middle – Hydration Bladder, tent, sleeping bad, cook gear, food, etc.
  3. Lightest Weight Gear – Outside – towels, lightweight clothing
  4. Quick Access Gear – Brain & Hipbelt – rain gear, first aid kit, headlamp, sunscreen, etc.
