Haley is our adventure dog, she loves going on adventures and exploring new places with us. But having a dog pack so she can carry her own gear is important. Until recently, Haley had only worn Wilderdog harnesses and we thought about getting their backpack but were afraid it wasn’t rugged enough for all adventures. So we began researching and stumbled upon the Ruffwear Front Range Day Pack so we decided to give it a try.
Why We Love this Dog Pack
The things we liked about it was that it was big enough to hold all of her gear but also small enough to compress when you don’t need it at full capacity. It also came in my signature color teal, had multiple leash attachments, and had a handle. So we decided to give it a try.
How did we train our dog to wear this pack?
After purchasing the dog pack, we started taking her on local walks with the dog pack unweighted and slowly added more weight, the more hikes we went on. On our latest hike, she carried her own food and water in the pack for a day hike. Haley was unphased by the weight and was able to move about normally. The only thing that got her a few times was she didn’t realize how wide she was with a pack on and would whack the pack against trees in narrow areas.
As someone who is always overly prepared in the backcountry, it’s nice to bring Haley on hikes and not have to carry extra weight for her. The main downfall of this pack is it’s challenging to properly balance the weight of the pack. Managing both water and food equally on both sides was tricky, especially as she drinks water. So it will take some trial and error to really figure out how to best balance the back but overall it’s a great pack for all our adventures!
